History of Trinity Church, Enfield (Methodist & United Reformed)

Other churches in this Circuit:

Trinity Church has its origins in the nineteenth century growth of the non-conformist churches in Enfield, among them a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Cecil Road, a Primitive Methodist Society in Chase Side and a Presbyterian Community on Church Street.

By the end of the century, Enfield Methodist Church was built on the present site for the Wesleyans. They were joined by the Primitive Society in 1936.

St Paul's Presbyterian Church was built across the road on the corner of Church Street and old Park Avenue. Both churches flourished, although Enfield Methodist Church had the problem of burning down in 1919! The Enfield fire service was slow to get their machine into action, leading to the indignity of the Ponders End pump arriving first on the scene. The church was rebuilt in 1921.

The ecumenical vision of ministers and members in the late twentieth century brought about a prospering union between Enfield Methodist and St Paul's Presbyterian (by then, United Reformed Church) in 1983. The last twenty years have seen Trinity with a foot in both Methodist and United Reformed Church denominations, drawing on the strengths found in each. With this in mind, please note that we are not Trinity Methodist Church but Trinity Church Enfield (Methodist and United Reformed).

A further significant event in our history has been the formation of the Enfield Town and Forty Hill Local Ecumenical Partnership between Trinity and six other churches of five denominations. This has led to mission and ministry to Enfield Town in a variety of forms, including the St Paul's Centre for ecumenical and community activities. We are thankful to God for the Spirit's work among us as we continue to service our Lord Jesus Christ.
