History of St John's Methodist Church Enfield

In 1954, a wooden hut was erected on a piece of ground bordering the A10 and the Elsinge Estate, and St John Methodist Church had arrived. Many people who supported St John in "The Hut" looked forward to the time when a proper brick building would be built. This in fact took place in 1959 and, from then on, we felt we had a real building that was fit to call Our Church.

The congregation grew, and various groups from the local community started to meet in our new building. The 16th Enfield Company of the Boys' Brigade, begun in 1957, and a very thriving Sunday School, were both well attended by the children living on the estate. Today, the Boys' Brigade continues as well as Guides, Brownies, and Rainbows, an After School Club for youngsters,

and a Holiday Club during the summer holidays. There is a Mother and Toddler group, a playgroup, an art class, a women’s fellowship group, a coffee morning, and a luncheon club.

Over the years, many well-loved members and friends have passed through the doors, people who have given their time and their love to keep the church alive.

Our worshipping congregation has fluctuated over the years, from just three at our services at one time to our main hall "bursting at the seams" with over 200 present for special occasions. Whatever our numbers, we hope and pray that there will be a worshipping community at St John Church on the Eisinge Estate for many years to come.
